Last Weeks Writing Prompt:

"Summer Vacation"

Poetry

:thumb166818008: A Summer's Day
It's summer and we're chasing dreams
Telling stories of love and smiling
It's all new and exciting and vivid
And nobody knows where we are
It's just for us, for you and me
It's morning and birds summon me from sleep
Hands captured in tight bonds
It's all hazy and soft and gentle
And nobody knows where we are
It's just for us, for you and me
It's lunchtime and we're eating outside
Picking and eating strawberries
It's all sweet and bright and happy
And nobody knows where we are
It's just for us, for you and me
It's afternoon and we're dozing now
Lazing in heavy sunshine blankets
It's all quiet and warm and sleepy
And nobody knows where we are
It's just for us, for you and me
It's evening and we're watching fireworks
Bangs fill our ears with strong hope
It's all loud and brash and delusional
And nobody knows where we are
It's just for us, for you and me
It's (finally) night and we're following stars
Beauty pricks at our eyes, brings tears
It's all sharp and dark and loving
And nobody know
Did you hear?summer is coming
i wait like Santa Clause rooftops
'til first snowflakes fall.
:thumb169421765: Library Land-SharkThere's a land-shark living in the library,
upstairs in the children's section!
A horrific, ferocious beast with serrated teeth!
I've seen it with my own eyes!
They must have brought it in to celebrate their
Summer Reading Program, with its
water-based theme this year.
How they captured it in the wild is anyone's guess.
There's a land-shark living in the library,
upstairs in the children's section!
A pointed dorsal fin is seen, bobbing
along above the bookcases.
Young girls and boys stop, pausing
on their way to grab a copy of
Green Eggs and Ham or Where the Wild Things Are,
and look down the long aisle of shelves.
They are ignorant of the danger.
The kids flee, squealing with laughter,
chased by the first few notes of Jaws' melody.
A polyester snout emerges into the open,
followed by a pair of beady plastic eyes.
The creature is perched atop the poor librarian's head!

How I wish you would end.
Forty-three days till

Summer Vacation
Dragged out
Time for the drama to start
No more running about
Summer Vacation
You were fun while it lasted
Then you went and tore me to pieces
Leaving me alone while everyone
Else went out and partied,
Camping and working.

Summer VacationI've drummed my fingers over the keyboard for days, weeks, months. I've hand written stories, math problems, and plans for days, weeks, months. The sigh of my exiting my school after the final exam I wrote still fresh in my mind, but of course it was only five days ago. That sigh was the start of my summer vacation, the purity of freedom and fun.
I've spent days swimming in my pool with my family and friends, hearing them laugh and smile, making me feel bad when I'm not laughing or smiling. So, I pretend to laugh when i'm not up to laughing.
I run with the pets and enjoy the day no matter what. I run to enjoy the freedom.
I remember yesterday, my family went to the lake. We were all laughing and the music was turned up. I remember the thrumming of my hurting ears, but I let it be. They're having fun, I can too.
I laugh and dance in front of the fire with my friend as we dance with those fire sparklers on-the fancy sparklers on cakes, I think. As they die down, I see him. Smiling at me

I wake up early in the morning, the light just coming through the curtains that barely cover my windows.  The first thing that I do that morning was to grab the picture that I had set next to my bed before I had fallen asleep the night before.
Getting dressed I take everything in, the old oak dresser, the phone that I had begged my parents to let me have before cell phones had taken over, the homemade bedspread that had covered me through many years.
It's still summer vacation, but there is something different about this one.  Deep in my stomach I had that feeling that everyone must get about this time in life.  So excited for what was coming, nervous about how it would go, and at the same time there is an emptiness.
My mind raced through the last few weeks, the memories came in brief flashes across my mind's screen.  Ice cream with Sandra yesterday to say goodbye, the way my little sister laughed when I pushed her on the
SummerThat last bell rings, FREEDOM! The students race away, eager to embrace their few months of a routine-free summer.  Already, in each of their minds the gears are turning, planning their perfect vacation. It was like an undertow that pulled everything along in its path. A subliminal chant that could be heard murmured in the groups of friends, sighed in relief by the teachers and even heard whispered by the breeze amongst the treetops.

Water A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.
-James Dent

The patio swing out back was the perfect place to spend the lazy days of summer. Built in shade and it could be folded down to turn into an outdoor bed. I was stretched out on my stomach, listening to the music playing on my iPod and reading a good book.
Suddenly, I felt a stream of water hit the middle of my back. My book didn't get hit at all, but whoever done such a deed was not excused.
"Zach!!" I quickly stood and ran inside when I saw my younger brother laughing, water gun in hand. I was not admitting defeat. I simply ran inside to put my book in a safe place and pulled out my water balloon kit.
Once I had a fair amount of water balloons, I carried them outside and set them on the table. My brother was nowhere to be found. I saw someone come out of the garage and immediately threw a balloon at the figure, thinking it was Zach. Bo
