Hello! I hope everyone is doing just fine and dandy.
I have a little announcement - a brainstorm, if you will.
With summer here, in its great big blaze of glory, I got to thinking...
I saw this youtube video today: Giving the Homeless New Shoes
and it made me upset. I could relate on so many levels, and it was lovely to see somebody doing something that wasn't blaming, bashing, hurting or awful to the people in the video.
There are an awful lot of homeless people. Whatever their reasons, there are too many. And there isn't a lot of awareness projected towards these people. Summer is hot, the weather is unpredictable, sometimes it's stormy - tornadoes, hurricanes, severe thunderstorms, soaring temperatures. While a lot of us are comfortable on those days, safe in our homes, a lot of us aren't.
I'd like to propose a mini-contest, open to all mediums. A story. A photograph. A painting. Something highlighting homelessness, a different side to it perhaps, or just focusing on the bleakness of the situation people suffer daily.
I was homeless for a very long time. Right up until I became pregnant with my first child, I struggled and here I am today, I managed to get out of that situation, I have clothes that fit and some extra pocket change. A computer and a home. But a lot of the time, people stay homeless until the day they pass away.
So write me a story. Take a picture for me. Show me a bright side of these people, or show me how low down they are, help me spread some words and images that help shed some light on the world that these people live in. The rules are simple:
Must be created on or after June 26th, 2014.
Must center around a homeless person or situation, past, present or future.
Can be any medium, literature, photography or digital and all those in between.
Send me the entry in note form.
Closing date: July 31st, 2014.
All entries will get a feature.
First: 200 points
Second: 100 points
Third: 50 points.
