1: What are some hints, tips or pointers that you could give somebody who wanted to start, not just for horror/macabre or conceptual, but for any genre?

Be creative and don’t be afraid of something not working out the way you first planned. Sometimes “failures” can lead to great idea and great images.

Darkroom on dA is a tribute to the traditional, involving chemical developing and printing techniques which have barely changed since the birth of photography, a symbol of the modern, making use of technological advances in digital processing, and a whole lot of amazing and beautiful things in between.

While the majority of Photography galleries on dA are subject-based, Darkroom is technique-based. Photographs using Darkroom techniques are generally accepted in the other photography galleries too, but if you wish to categorise your Darkroom photography submission based on how it was created, then Photography > Darkroom is here to allow you to do that.

*Anathema-Photography is a Canadian photographer with a knack for mayhem. Her style is an interesting mix of drop dead gorgeous and completely sadistic, not to mention disgusting (in only the best way possible).

The collective list of resources available to you as a photo-manipulation artist, or a traditional artist or painter, is also quite extensive.

Suggesting daily deviations can be somewhat of a daunting experience. There are old hats at the game, who suggest consistantly, but for somebody who has never done it before, or who wants to self-suggest their work, it can be a bit scary.
The horror/macabre photography gallery is only a tiny section of deviantART, it's hallowed halls are small and dusty, and sometimes it is overlooked. For those who are interested in the gooey, gory goodness contained within them, though, here are a few tips and tricks to suggesting a daily deviation.

A daily deviation is a feature given to a small assortment of deviations every day, chosen by staff and volunteer members who want to show a wider audience an image they feel is deserving.

1) What was your first camera, and what did you foresee yourself doing with it? Did you imagine that you would be a nature photographer, or a portrait photographer, or was it an easy transition to creating darker work for you?
`PorcelainPoet - I think my first camera was a Kodak point and shoot. Something as small as maybe 5.0 megapixels. I just knew I wanted to start doing portraits with it. And I didn't have any models yet, so I used myself. I was doing daily self portrait sessions for my first year or so of photography exploration. At that time I was 15

When one thinks of the horror and macabre genre, they probably think about blood, guts, and shocking images depicting death and severe harm. But there is another side to the scary, a side that uses less color, less shock value effects, and imagination and subtlety ro produce a chilling image.
Things such as ghosts, forests, graveyards, abandoned houses - all of these can be used as fitting and suitable models for a very spooky scene. Some might argue, with a great amount of merit, that an abandoned house can make a better model than a human being. They have a good point, though it lacks personality, for an abandoned house has its own story to tell, but it is one that can be brought out only in visual images or written word, for unlike a human model, it cannot speak and share.

Real life, historical life, has given us a pretty good indication of what frightens us as a collective. We have expounded on the elements of horror from wars, psychological experimentation and illness, serial killers, superstitions and folklore, etc.
Before there was a way to express horrific events in still frame, we had literature, and word of mouth. Eventually, literature was adapted to movies, and with movies came photography. Without all of those elements, we would never have a horror genre. Without a built in want to be scared, or shocked, it never would have grown to the proportions it has over the last 150 years!

Traditional Darkroom is where it all began. It started in a world where the word 'photography' didn't yet exist and the art of creating images of reality with light and chemicals sat somewhere between science and magic. Did you know that the mathematicians Aristotle and Euclid describe pinhole cameras in the 4th and 5th centuries?

In the early 1800s, artist/inventors like Louis Dageurre and Henry Fox Talbot (among others) experimented with ways of fixing images using chemicals, including silver compounds, following exposures on materials like glass and metal, lasting from several minutes to several hours. By 1840, Talbot was creating negative images using the calotype process and John Herschel had invented the cyanotype process (where the term 'blueprint' comes from) and created the first glass negative in 1839.

Members are more than welcome to self suggest their own art work for a Daily Deviation, in fact many CVs highly encourage self suggestions. While self suggesting may have been something people frowned upon in the past, this is thankfully no longer the case as we all recognize the need for self promotion in the competitive world of art.
But suggesting my own work is embarassing
There is no shame in trying to get yourself and your work seen. By self suggesting you are merely looking to gain more exposure from a broader audience. Look at it this way, if you're not willing to advertise your own work and get more clients and exposure, who will?
When we CVs receive self suggestions we treat them the same as we would any other suggestion so you can easily treat a self suggestion the same as you would a submission of your art to a group so more users can see the piece. While we do not guarantee that we
