The Horror Scope: Issue Six

The Horror Scope: Issue Six is a very special issue. It is the first issue since October, 2010. My sincere thanks to the interviewee, for taking part in the reintroductory issue.

Welcome to The Horror Scope, a bi-weekly informative interview and feature with some of Deviant Art's less prominant, and some very well known, darker artists.

The Horror Scope knows no genre. From literature to traditional art and sculptor, alongside costumery and film making, what these interviews are designed to do is shed some light in to the otherwise very cramped and dark corners of the artists mind.

Horror and Macabre themed work can be sometimes misconstrued and used against the artist. Another goal of these informative features is to challenge the overlying stigma that they face; That they are different from everybody else.

This week's installment of The Horror Scope brings WolverineAC in to the spotlight. He was gracious enough to let me delve in to his brain, to poke around and see what makes him tick. I hope you enjoy reading about this wonderful, eclectic deviant as much as I enjoyed asking him a few questions.

:iconpullingcandy: - "You upload a variety of work to DeviantArt.Com - is there any specific genre you attribute yourself to more then another? What is your favorite medium and genre to work with, and why did you start uploading to the site in the first place?"

:iconwolverineac: - "By far, I love using my wife as a model. She is a true example of feminine strength and what a person thinks of when they think of a lady. My mother raised my sister and I on her own so I guess I truly love to portray the strength and beauty within every woman. I also upload a good amount of horror work. It may sound a little crazy, but it helps me work through tough times in my life or is at least a positive way for me to express anger and frustration without causing real harm. Ha!"

:iconpullingcandy: - "You have done some work in the horror and macabre photography field. Do you have any specific reason or rhyme to what you decide to do, when you do it? Are your shots planned out beforehand or do you do them spur of the moment?"

:iconwolverineac: - "I usually don’t have things planned out. They just sort of happen when I get an idea in my head or the work is a result of frustration or rage and I need an outlet. I think the only ones I really had a plan for before I shot it was “Adam and Evil” and the “Plastic Love” series. The rest just fell into my lap or got created in a pissy rage. I came up with the idea for “All that you have taken” and was shooting within 10 minutes after I got the concept in my head."

Please don't look... by WolverineAC

:iconpullingcandy: - "What would you top three uploads to Deviantart.Com be from your gallery, and why did you choose them? Is there any story behind them that you'd like to share?"

:iconwolverineac: - "“Apparition” is probably my second favorite image I have ever taken. We located a Cement factory that had been abandoned for over a hundred years. The architecture was insane and I really wanted a ghostly image of Sarah in white. I had to do it.
All that you have taken” still to this day helps me deal with everyday frustrations of people that have taken so much from me and in the end, left a pile of shit in my lap.
Third is tough. Pick any of my wife. I love them all. It is a true treasure to me to have someone that I can not only share my life with, but be my soul mate, best friend and creative partner in crime. Not to mention she seriously is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life.
But personally, for me, if I were to pick something of myself and for myself, I would say “Dark Hope”. That point in my life I was searching for answers and had come within a millimeter of losing everything that meant a damn thing to me. In that moment when I clicked the shutter button, I saw a tiny light in the distance and prayed that light lead to redemption."

:iconpullingcandy: - "You have at least one external 'project' that I know of, Paradox 2.8. Care to share a little about that?"

:iconwolverineac: - "Paradox 2.8 is an artist alliance including Sarah, a gifted friend Lisa M. and myself. This area is not too accepting of edgy or contemporary art so we came together to give the local art scene a kick in the balls. We held a juried art exhibit at a local night club featuring local artists that shared our views. It was awesome. We had a rock band playing in the background as people viewed the art themed the seven deadly sins. Drinks flowed and it just damn rocked. Life has been a little busy for all three of us as of late but we will be having our own combined show some time yet this year. Fuck flowers, fuck sunsets, fuck lighthouses, the bulk of what is considered “art” in our area. We are going to shove Paradox 2.8 in everyone’s faces. MUAW!!!"

:iconpullingcandy: - "Have you ever felt singled out, strange or judged based on the content of some of your work? Why do you create the images you do, when you do them, especially the edgier ones?"

:iconwolverineac: - "Yeah. I have been called sick, twisted, a pornographer and told I will burn in hell because of my work. I was told once that “All that you have taken” was the reason that the nation of Islam hates America. Seriously?! It’s out of the norm from what is considered art around here and people don’t understand it. People usually fear what they do not understand. Even though I get shit for my work, I will not bend, I will not buckle and I sure as hell won’t be broken. It’s weird because the same people that hate my work are now asking me advice on their own work."

Left Behind by WolverineAC

:iconpullingcandy: - "Tell us something completely random about yourself - share a story, maybe your favorite food, drink or activity. Do you have a hobby outside of photography? "

:iconwolverineac: - "I have the most “wrong” sense of humor. My family and friends are seriously concerned about me. Not really, but they I have been known to cause people to shoot beer out of their nose and have on many occasions been told that there is a “special place I hell for me.” Anything from fucking Alpacas to geriatric porn. “Bitches with broken hips” was one of my favorites. Ha!
Something else about me….well….aside from wanting to be known as an artist, a designer, whatever….I want to be known as a family man. Weird, right? But my family and friends are the most important to me and I’d give them all of my heart, literally, if they needed it.
I also hunt, fish and garden. I am from Michigan and it sort of is a requirement to be male here."

:iconpullingcandy: - "Any advice for people out there who are just picking up a camera, or trying to create projects or find projects to participate in? Why did you first pick up the camera, yourself?"

:iconwolverineac: - "Give it hell. Learn the rules and then throw them out and give it more hell! Find something important to you and play with that bitch until you get it right. Practice, practice, practice, then practice some more. Ask peers for suggestions, critiques and advice, but develop a thick skin. Not everyone is going to see your vision or “get” your work. It’s OK, but keep fucking going! Never give up, never give in. Stay true to yourself or give up your artistic pursuits.
I have always had a creative streak in me. I grew up in a creative environment. Graphic and Product design as well as fabrication and sculpture gave me my start. But I always wanted to be a photographer. I loved its purity and still do. I have dabbled for many years but became serious about it when I started dating Sarah. She pushed me hard because she believed in me. I took a couple images of my son that she fell in love with and made mention it made her want to start photography herself. We pushed each other, helped each other grow and supported the shit out of each other. I can’t imagine my life without my camera. It has become my third eye, an extension of my hand and my way of expressing myself."
